What is the purpose of food? Food is the means by which organic beings obtain energy in order to replenish their bodies and continue to exist. If this is true than why do we and by we I mean "Human Beings" treat food as a pastime? Some individuals might say boredom; others might suggest that as a sentient being we as humans are obligated to perfect any task, even the cultivation and preparation of food. Food is omnipresent in every aspect of our day to day lives we consume it before beginning our daily labor, we constantly see it in advertisements on TV, we are even confronted by it in the practice of religion. In almost all faiths old and new wine has been observed and regarded as a holy drink. In Catholicism it is symbolically used as a metaphor for the blood of Christ. In Judaism wine is sacred as well as bread.
From a philosophical point of view, is it right to treat food in such a way? What would we be if we didn’t have fast food, comfort food, soul food, gourmet, food, dessert etc.
I personally believe that one should thoroughly enjoy ones meal with exceptional enthusiasm. At the same time I encourage others to abstain from certain foods that symbolize a corruption of the word. I speak of synthetic foods. Foods such as McDonald’s are synthesized from the entrails of all forms of livestock purged of their disease by chemical agents such as ammonia, reducing said entrails to a heap of malicious corporate greed. This greed is a perfect manifestation of the philosophical and ideological aspect of food. Without deviating to far from my main point I would like to reiterate that food is not a pastime it is the means by which we replenish our bodies.
Almost everyone has heard at least once the saying "You are what you eat". Can ones diet truly depict one’s life? What a person chooses to consume can reveal intimate details about them. A wealthy individual can acquire lavish food such as truffles which are worth their weight in gold, while others can barely afford canned tuna. While we attempt to define food it becomes more evident that food defines us.
